Illuminated Audio is a complete reconstruction of Gigi's debut eponymous CD by producer & dubmaster Bill Laswell, who went back to the original multi-track masters & re-imagined new versions to highlight both Gigi's singular vocals and the seductive music that carried them along. Having done similar projects with the music of Bob Marley, Miles Davis, and Carlos Santana, Laswell is an adept master at finding jewel-like routes through the same terrain that ends up in very different yet rewarding places. As different and unique as "Illuminated Audio" sounds, no new music or overdubs were employed in its creation. The master musicians who perform (on both albums) include saxophonists Henry Threadgill, Wayne Shorter & Pharoah Sanders, guitarist Nicky Skopelitis, percussionists Aaiyb Dieng & Karsh Kale, and Laswell with the bass bottom. The result is a swirling, heady and mystical reinterpretation of the original music that, like Gigi's voice, stands entirely on its own. Highly recommended, & truly unique! |
