The chant world takes a leap into full accessibility with the pioneering & thoroughly earthshaking production of Donna DeLory's "The Lover and the Beloved." Even though the 6 tracks are comprised of the most well-known chants out there, they have never been sung quite like this. "Om Nama Shivayah" becomes a hymn to the healing of surrender. "Hare Krishna" expresses the power of love that rises above all else. "Govinda Jaya Jaya" is a joyful chant of pure ecstasy. And, the centerpiece for me, "He Ma Durga" offers a respite that has no boundaries whatsoever. There is an enveloping innocence, like the safe feel of a child's blanket, or the warmth of the sun when the wind has subsided. The gentle caress of Donna's voice, sometimes wispy, sometimes soulful, and always with the passion of a deep spirituality, draws the listener all the way in to a temple-like realm, filled with atmospheres and carefully-conceived rhythms and beats that helps one lose all bearings as they fall, weightless, into a sacred space that is by all accounts previously uncharted. By intertwining passages in English with the Sanskrit mantras, a transcendent, all encompassing effect is realized, and the meditative and hypnotic power is undeniable. Donna has one of those rare voices that is equally at home in pop motifs (like her debut "Bliss"), songs of yearning and deep feelings (on her "In the Glow") and certainly the world of chants & mantras, all with an effortless artistry that rises above and beyond to help the listener find themselves swept away on a magic carpet of devotion and freedom. This is her most fluid and personal CD, & stands alongside "In the Glow" on the very top tier of vocal/chant recordings. Accompanying artists include long-time collaborators Dave Stringer (vocals), Quinn (drums), Cameron Stone (cello), Girish Gambhira (tablas), Dave Dale (co-production with Donna) and more. This is the real thing, an experience of listening that is magical from the inside out, sure to be a close companion for a long time to come. |
