New songs from Donna DeLory are a certain treat, and in this case, there is the added bonus of revisiting some of her recent favorites as well. Re-recorded and "new improved” versions of previous songs blend in perfectly alongside newly penned compositions that shine as bright as could be expected. Donna is a singer non pareil. With over thirty-five years in the music business, I have seen and heard singers from all genres perform in concert. Of all those I have been privileged to experience, Donna DeLory rests at the very top of the top tier. Her unique ability to express the emotions that underlie a song, whether hers or another songwriters, is unparalleled, in my estimation. Much has been made of her association with Madonna, from years of touring and travel, but Donna is her own artist, and her creative expression stands alone, a singular voice in a sea of sounds-likes. She sings in a way that will easily encompass a whisper or a scream, drawing from a source unseen to extract every possible feeling from each stanza, each phrase and every noticeable nuance. Already she has way too many "favorite" songs to fit into one evening's event, and her ability to cover familiar songs such as “Hey Jude” or her signature “In the Sun” (penned by Joseph Arthur, but made entirely her own...) always leaves you wanting even more. Her new versions of “One Day” and “Glow” and esp. “In the Sun” shine with more of an edge and imaginative percussive textures. The seven new songs, highlighted by the title track (with an appearance by Krishna Das), among other standout pieces, are more than anyone could ask for. Excellent support comes from the likes of Girish, co-producer Mac Quayle, Quinn, Greg Leisz, Jay Bellerose, Dom Breaux, and long-time collaborator Cameron Stone (cello and co-composer on four songs). These songs are close to Donna's heart and have now been set free, to roam and cultivate as musical gifts and treasures. |
