Immediately my favorite CD, this new independently produced CD by new Backroads discovery Donna De Lory has captured my heart totally and thoroughly. While I have already fallen in love with "Bliss," the earlier release by this talented singer-songwriter, an am equally anticipating her new kirtan/chant CD "The Lover and the Beloved" (due later in December on the Ajna label), this is all I need for now. Stirring chants, beautiful love songs, and an unbelievable version of Robbie Robertson's great song, 'Unbound' are immediate highlights, along with 'In the Sun' which will touch your soul deeply and open your heart. Superb musician ship is provided by Cameron Stone on cello, Mark Browne on bass, Quinn on drums and percussion, Girish Gambhira on tabla, and others on flutes and keyboards. Long-time collaborator Dave Stringer plays tamboura and Swaramaydala, and contributes his rocking version of 'Govinda Jaya Jaya'. Donna's dreamy voice, an endearing mix of sensitivity and power, blesses every song, and they overflow with spirituality of the most universal, joyous and ecstatic nature. I can't say enough about this; Donna joins Lisbeth, Tina, Premal, Miriam, Suzanne and the rest on the top tier of female vocalists gracing the current Backroads offerings. |
