The Bliss duo from the UK has been a best-seller for some time now, with their "100,000 Angels" and more recent CDs like "You," and their contributions to "Heart of Innocence" So you can imagine our surprise when another group called Bliss started showing up on the "Buddha Bar" series and elsewhere, and suddenly there came a release on the revitalized Quango label called "Quiet Letters" — by Bliss. Also from Europe this "other" Bliss has members from Sweden, Denmark and West Africa, and their nothing short of stunning blend of sensuous vocals, chill out beats and world rhythmic elements made them our #1 vocal release for 2005. Their North American debut is a chill out masterpiece, deeply rooted in a fine collage of western, African and classical musical influences, and representing the vast musical backgrounds of the band. With its captivating vocals, gentle percussion and gracious orchestration, "Quiet Letters" is one of those albums that you have always been looking for without ever finding. Featuring guest vocals by Zero 7's Sophie Barker, "Quiet Letters" is an album that transports you far beyond the beaches of Ibiza, on a travel through African soul, Scandinavian jazz, and ethereal pop. It is a challenging task that leaves me without words to describe just how good this CD is, and I have listened to it probably a hundred times, always discovering more magic in their music. I guess it goes to show you can’t have too much Bliss! |
