If there are levels of heavenly ecstasy that can be measured by those of us in human form, then it must be said that the third and latest CD by Ashana takes the whole idea of magnificence and musical healing to the highest level, literally. “Beloved” is the title of this CD, and her songs, tenderly sung to the beloved in all her forms, offers seven exquisite tracks that include a haunting rendition of the Lord's Prayer sung in the original Aramaic, a joyous Sufi chant, some original songs by Ashana and collaborator Thomas Barquee, and luminous versions of the Latin “Dona Nobis Pacem” and the Gaelic “Deep Peace”. Collectively, these songs reflect a deep sense of compassion and lyrical sensitivity that touches the listener on tender emotional levels, invoking feelings of gratitude, comfort, yearning and peace. Ashana's soaring angelic vocals are like no other. In tandem with quartz crystal bowls and Barquee's world-class production and musical contributions, it all adds up to an immediately timeless recording of prayerful, celestial sounds to open your heart and deliver you innocently into the arms of the Divine. Other players such as Cameron Stone on cello (plays with Donna DeLory and others), Girish on tablas and percussion and Simone Sello on guitars bring a further dimension to the gorgeous sound. The 7-12 second resonance of the crystal bowls hangs in the air to close each piece beautifully. I could dwell in that space for endless periods of time! With “Beloved,” Ashana has fully emerged as a truly divine artist in this ever-expanding realm of healing music. |
